Car lights are essential for your safety on the road. Unfortunately, they can malfunction from time to time, leaving you in a sticky situation. In this guide, we’ll show you how to fix common car light issues so you can get back on the road in no time.
Step 1: Check the Bulbs
The first thing you should do when your car lights aren’t working is to check the bulbs. To do this, turn on your headlights and walk around the car, checking each one. If you find a burned-out bulb, replace it with a new one. If you’re not sure what type of bulb you need, consult your owner’s manual or ask for assistance at an auto parts store.
Step 2: Inspect the Fuses
If all of your bulbs are functioning but your lights still aren’t working, the issue may be with the fuses. Locate your car’s fuse box, which is usually under the dashboard or under the hood. Use your owner’s manual to find the fuse that controls your lights and check to see if it’s blown. If it is, replace it with a new one of the same amperage.
Step 3: Check the Wiring
If the bulbs and fuses are both in working order, the problem may be with the wiring. Inspect the wiring for any damage, such as fraying or corrosion. If you find any damage, repair or replace the wiring as needed. If you’re not comfortable doing this yourself, take your car to a mechanic.
Step 4: Clean the Contacts
Dirty contacts can cause your car lights to malfunction. To clean them, disconnect the battery and remove the contacts from the bulbs. Use a small wire brush or a piece of fine-grit sandpaper to gently scrub the contacts until they’re clean. Reconnect the contacts and the battery and test your lights.
Step 5: Adjust the Aim
If your headlights are too high or too low, they can be a hazard to other drivers. To adjust the aim, park your car on level ground facing a wall. Turn on your headlights and mark the center of each beam on the wall with tape. Measure the distance between the marks and adjust the aim as needed using the adjustment screws on the back of the headlight assembly.
Step 6: Replace the Headlight Assembly
If your headlights are still not working after trying these steps, you may need to replace the entire headlight assembly. This is a more advanced repair and may require the assistance of a mechanic.
Step 7: Replace the Light Switch
If none of your lights are working, the issue may be with the light switch. To replace it, remove the old switch and install a new one according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Step 8: Check the Alternator
If your car lights are dim or flickering, the problem may be with the alternator. Use a multimeter to test the voltage at the battery with the car running. If the voltage is less than 13.5 volts, you may need to replace the alternator.
Step 9: Replace the Battery
If your car lights are still not working properly, the issue may be with the battery. Check the battery voltage with a multimeter. If it’s below 12 volts, the battery may need to be replaced.
Step 10: Take Your Car to a Mechanic
